More information on FAO's three flagship initiatives can be found below:

  • The Digital Villages Initiative aims to transform at least 1000 villages globally into Digital Villages, leveraging Information and Communication Technologies to enhance agricultural productivity and rural development by providing access to services, markets, and knowledge. The initiative, piloted in 8 countries in Europe and Central Asia, merges the European Smart Villages approach with FAO's rural development expertise to address local agrifood system challenges.
  • The Green Cities Initiative promotes urban agriculture, green infrastructure, and local food production in Europe and Central Asia, as means to foster resilience and healthier urban environments. FAO offers knowledge sharing, capacity-building and policy advice to support the implementation of practices such as community farms, rooftop gardens, and vertical agriculture.
  • The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) initiative preserves and promotes unique traditional agricultural systems globally, recognizing their value in cultural heritage, biodiversity conservation, and rural development. With 86 designated sites in 26 countries, including 10 in Europe, it GIAHS is a living, evolving system of human communities that contribute to sustainable development.
