FEEDING PEOPLE, NOT LANDFILLS: Using social norms to tackle food waste in cities

Produced by ICLEI Europe as part of the CHORIZO project, this guidance aims to support local governments in tackling social norms to reduce food waste. It offers dozens of examples of how cities can (and already are) leveraging social norms for food waste prevention and reduction - from strategy and multi-level governance to procurement, legislation and regulation, cross-sectoral partnerships and private sector engagement, communication, public events and awareness-raising, or waste management and asset management.

The CHORIZO project, co-funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aims to improve the understanding of the links between social norms, consumer behaviours, decisions of economic actors and food loss and waste generation. The project addresses research gaps and helps a range of food chain actors improve their decision-making and engagement to more effectively prevent and reduce food waste.
