Shared Learning, Inspired Action: Insights From Global Exchanges on Strengthening Urban Food Markets

Urban food markets are critical places for food system transformation, with potential to address food insecurity, access to healthy diets, livelihoods, and environmental pressures by linking formal and informal economies and urban and rural areas. Despite their importance, markets are under-researched and narrowly framed, often viewed through economic and infrastructure lenses rather than their broader social, nutrition, environmental and governance roles.

The ICLEI CityFood Interest Group on Transforming Food Markets around the World was established as a platform for city practitioners and their partners to learn from peers and experts and exchange insights on best practices for improving food markets. To support their learning journeys, ICLEI CityFood and GAIN organized eight expert-led training exchanges in 2025 clustered under four themes, including market governance, gender and social inclusion, the assessment and management of food waste, and improving access to nutritious food in urban markets. The paper "Shared Learning, Inspired Action: Insights From Global Exchanges on Strengthening Urban Food Markets" shares insights, outcomes and key takeaways of these engagements.
