Based on the success of the 1st International Conference on School Meals and Public Procurement held virtually in June 2022, the Government of New Taipei City, Asian Local Governments for Organic Agriculture (ALGOA) and the Global Alliance of Organic Districts (GAOD) will co-host a conference on October 16-18, 2024. The event, implemented by IFOAM-Organics Asia in partnership with the Association of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples’ Development, will focus on the role of school meals in promoting social inclusion and leaving no child behind.

Indeed, still today, too many children remain at risk of poverty or social exclusion. School meals are among the largest-scale social protection interventions, with nearly 420 million children reached worldwide. Based on this observation, and on the lack of harmonized policies on school meals, ICLEI CityFood launched a petition calling for the EU to guarantee healthy school meals and food education for every child in every EU school. Building on the growing momentum - with the petition just reaching over 100,000 signatures - Peter Defranceschi, CityFood Global Coordinator, will share his perspectives on the current window of opportunity to shift the dial on school meals in the EU and around the world. He will also give the glimpse at ICLEI's flagship SchoolFood4Change project and its key learnings, exploring synergies and collaboration opportunities with stakeholders in the South East Asia region.
